Take The Nascar Trivia Test

One of the things sports fans love to do as a hobby is to challenge themselves with trivia – whether generally, or involving a specific sport.  Racing is certainly no exception, as countless people enjoy NASCAR trivia.

Some NASCAR trivia involves questions asked; other times, it can involve a fact about a race, driver, or track.  For example, some trivia surrounding races includes:

  • Where was the first NASCAR race held??
  • What was the first NASCAR race televised nationwide from start to finish??
  • Who was the first driver to win the Daytona 500 in a Chevrolet??
  • Until 1972, the qualifying races also counted in the standings.
  • The Daytona 500 was not always the first points race of the year.
  • What was the closest finish ever in a NASCAR race??
  • Beginning in 1982, NASCAR decided to begin each season with the Daytona 500.

Ever wonder about the drivers of the sport and what they experience during a race??  Some more NASCAR trivia:

  • Drivers can lose 5-10 pounds in sweat during a race.
  • While racing, NASCAR drivers maintain the same heart rate as a marathon runner would for about the same length of time
  • On turns, NASCAR drivers can experience 3 Gs of force against their bodies comparable to the forces pressing down on shuttle astronauts at liftoff.
  • Research shows drivers who are well-conditioned are better prepared to handle G-forces – while building muscle mass provides more protection in case of a wreck.
  • A study in anticipatory timing found racecar drivers possess the same ability to anticipate what was going to happen as a hockey goalie or a quarterback.

There is, of course, much NASCAR trivia and tidbits about the cars and what makes them tick – and how they come undone...:

  • How many members are in a NASCAR pit crew??  Name them.
  • Where are restrictor plates mandated by NASCAR located on the vehicle??
  • Who was the first person to ever crash in a Winston Cup race??
  • No driver has died in a crash since NASCAR began requiring head-and-neck restraints in 2001
  • The hardest crash in NASCAR (since black boxes were implemented in cars in 2001) was recorded at 128 Gs; it happened to Jerry Nadeau at Richmond International Speedway in May 2003.
  • SAFER barriers, which NASCAR has installed at most tracks, reduce crash impacts on drivers by 70 percent or more.
  • The debris commonly referred to as "marbles" – which are often blamed by drivers for causing them to lose control of their cars – are made up of bits of rubber that get shaved off tires, as well as dirt and/or gravel which are blown around by wind force created by passing vehicles.

Then, there is NASCAR trivia pertaining to championships and success:

  • Richard Petty holds the modern era record with 13 wins (in 30 races) in a season.
  • Where did Richard Petty win his 200th race??
  • Tony Stewart and Cale Yarborough are the only drivers to finish last in the Daytona 500 and still win the cup series title in the same season.
  • Cale Yarborough is the only driver ever to win three consecutive championships (1976, 1977, 1978).
  •  No drivers have gone an entire season without winning a single race, only to still win the championship.
  • Who has the most NASCAR championships??
  • Alan Kulwicki was the last owner/driver to claim the series title.
